The MacLachlans represent the Chief's fighting "tail", family, tenants and subtenants sworn to support the Chief of the Clan when he goes to war. With the arrival of the true heir to the throne Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) the Chief called on the clan to muster their men and support Charlie in the spring of 1745. After the battles of Prestonpans, Falkirk and Culloden, the army was destroyed, both Chief Lachlan MacLachlan and his son (ADC to the Prince, also Lachlan) were killed. Charles ultimately fled to France, peace was made between the European powers and the Stuarts never reclaimed the throne. Charles died childless and with him, the Stuart cause.
Every year at a selected historic site in North America, the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 is re-enacted. These events also give a glimpse to the public of the Clan system and the life of the Scottish Highland commoner as well as the tactics used by both armies in the conflict.
